REPORT OF ACTIONS
23JUN2011
Possible enemy contact in the village of Simonskall, 1/C 113th Cavalry Squadron sent to investigate. Mixed enemy presence of Wehrmacht-Heer and SS troops defending the village, Platoon forums up on the road and begins its assault.
Probing a series of foxholes on the edge of town, reconnaissance finds them to be abandoned and 2nd Squad occupies the position as 1st squad rushes towards the roadblock. Leaving Recon behind behind to cover the Platoon's rear, the two squads move in columns on either side of the road and assault the town Inn, confirmed to have enemies.
Taking no fire initially, 1st Squad flanks North of the building to sweep the forests on its side and immediately comes under MG fire, which kills Pfc. Morahn. Cpl. Hatsune is told to silence the MG and does so with prejudice, resulting in 3 enemy deaths, but bursts of automatic fire from a nearby barn drive the squad back. Hatsune holds position and protects 2nd Squad as they move to clear the building. Pfc. Krajcir and Pfc. Bailey clear 2 floors without incident but are blocked at the stairs to the 3rd floor. In the resulting exchange of fire, Bailey is killed as is an enemy. Pfc. Krajcir backs off and holds position while waiting for the rest of the squad to move past him and clear out the trapped enemy.
So far, the battle is going to plan, then disaster strikes. Eager to get at the enemy, 2nd Squad forgets their spacing, and when the enemy tosses a grenade out the room, it lands among the densely packed riflemen, killing and maiming them all. In an instant, the Platoon's strength has been cut in half.
Cut off from the Recon and HQ element, 1st Squad does its best to fight its way towards the Chapel and to complete our objective, however the death of the Platoon leader results in a breakdown of communications, making any effort to link up skewed and inefficient. 1st Squad, against all odds however, takes the Inn and reduces the squad severely.
At this point, all cohesion is lost, the Recon attempts to attack the Chapel unsupported and they are predictably cut down by the well dug-in enemy. The surviving members retreat from the village and the attack is called off, a dismal failure.
For the cost of 8 enemy dead and a brief foothold in the Village the Platoon suffered 16 casualties, while it secured 2/3 principal objectives assigned to it, it could not carry the day.
