Report of Actions, Northern Front: Zhukov's 3rd Shock Army
General advance attempted on the 18th of August against the Fascist LVI.PanzerKorps
The 3rd Shock Army, advanced over the previously captured Seelow Heights - now completely devoid of enemy presence - and into the heart of the Fascist capital. At this point several Rifle and Submachinegun elements of the 51st Guards Rifles became separated from their Parent units and tank support in the ruined and rubble-choked suburbs of Berlin.
Field-Grade commanders report that artillery was ineffective in the rubble and ruins, it did not help the men gain initiative in the attack.
Despite all these handicaps and the poor terrain in which we were to advance, the units moved against defenders that fought more like lions then defeated men; an attempt to pierce the enemy lines towards a Government building to the North was stopped dead in its tracks by a well placed Axis roadblock based around several Machineguns. The post was contained by a small band of marksmen and the entire weight of the attack shifted to the East towards an apartment block. This move unfortunately exposed the flank of the advancing units in the process. We had little other choice; repeated attempts to breakthrough and envelop to the North would've resulted in undue losses of men and material, and would've left us seriously deprived in our attempt to destroy the enemy.
The attack to the East however, proved to be effective; as expected mass casualties were suffered int he attack on the Apartments. Morale dipped and men began to refuse to enter the apartment block, strong words and the threat of violence helped them find their courage. Eventually the pressure put on the apartments drew off enough reinforcements to cause the Northern roadblock to collapse and, quickly shifting the focus of our attack, several units of men swung North yet again through the Government building and brought themselves unto the rear of the Enemy. Our brave storm groups managed to enter the Apartments, where a very vigorous grenade duel began between the enemy forces, whom darted room to room throwing out hand grenades. Eventually the last Fascist defenders fell dead and a final Fascist MG position fell to the force of fire of our surviving units.
We suffered a high amount of losses amongst our Officers and NCOs, an unacceptable amount, Komandir. However, the men, tired though they may be, are victorious. No attempt to counterattack our newly gained positions were made. The Situation is fully in hand.
