REPORT OF ACTIONS
19FEB2011
On 18FEB2011 the enemy, comprising of SS Infantry and Reconnaissance elements (suspect: Divisional Reconnaissance) re-crossed the River Seine and drove back Infantry of the 5th Infantry Division, XIX Corps. All attempts to counter-attack throughout the day and night of 18FEB2011 and 19FEB2011 were repulsed, and the enemy steadily expanded their bridgehead throughout the day. A night patrol was conducted by C Troop, 113th Cavalry Squadron (113th Group, XIX Corps) in an attempt to ascertain the depth and strength of the enemy bridgehead, and if the opportunity was present to re-secure the bridges before they were destroyed, as well as seize any key terrain that was lightly held. If unable to do that, the Troop was expected to maintain contact with the enemy and tie him down until the morning of 20FEB2011. There would be no need.
Enemy were expected to be deployed in a box-like formation between MALTOT-HAUT-'RUINS'-ROAD TO ORNE, but the dispositions within this area were utterly unknown to the Troop. As a result, the Troop, consisting of 1 Recon Platoon and 1 Rifle Section were expected to gain this information through reconnaissance and force. Using a ridge line about 100m to the front of HAUT-MALTOT, troopers conducted dismounted reconnaissance and confirmed that there was a token force in HAUT, supported by Pak-40 AT guns. One rifle squad was ordered to maintain contact visually, while the grand majority of the Troop moved rapidly to the left flank, seizing high ground to the left of HAUT, and pushing forward to Ruins with 1 M8 in tow to ward off any counter-attacks. The patrol then began a cautious, two and one half hour probing firefight with forces in HAUT, pinning them there for a while. Both M8s now concentrated on the left flank, with the Reconnaissance Platoon in tow, and pushed towards ORNE, which had been abandoned by the enemy without a shot. Contact with an enemy Recon vehicle had been made, but the firefights were brief and inconclusive.
At this point, an assault on HAUT was made, with fire from MALTOT attempting to cover a right-flank by a rifle squad; which soon bogged down and found itself pinned. It held its position, repelling two attempts to destroy its half-track in the process and suffering the loss of its leaders, before extracting itself in good order to "hem in" the forces at HAUT. No further attempts were made on HAUT at this time, but fire from MALTOT continued to discourage the enemy from retreating to aid "RUINS", which was quickly coming under attack from its rear by the Reconnaissance Platoon.
The quick movement to the rear of "RUINS" bogged down as the Recon Platoon found itself spread out and picked apart by enemies in the Ruins, and through retreats and counterattacks the position changed hands 4 times, and the enemy managed to disengage some of his forces from HAUT to counter the threat to his rear. At this time, the enemy Recon car re-appeared, and devastated one Greyhound instantly. Return fire from the second damaged it, and forced its retreat, but it defended itself with skill and in turn destroyed the second Greyhound. Despite the enemy clearly having the fire superiority, the damaged enemy car limped off to HAUT and attempted to engage, ineffectively, MALTOT. After quite some time, it would be destroyed by AT fire.
A rifle squad (1st, SL: Masterson) helped secure the situation at "RUINS", destroying the remaining enemy with no loss to themselves. The enemy was now surrounded and cut off from the river; and several calls to surrender were made - and promptly refused. After a prolonged firefight, a final push removed the remaining enemy at little further cost. Regardless, what started as a patrol action devolved into a full-scale and costly firefight.
